Efficacy of riboflavin/UV-A corneal phototherapy as stand-alone treatment for ulcerative keratitis in horses

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy riboflavin/UV-A corneal phototherapy in comparison with topical antimicrobials for treatment ulcers horses. Nineteen horses a diagnosis ulceration were randomised receive either (11 horses) or antimicrobial therapy (8 horses). consisted application riboflavin-enriched ophthalmic solution onto cornea 20 min followed by UV-A irradiation at 30 mW/cm2 3 using point-of-care device. A complete ophthalmological examination performed enrolment and then day 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 after treatment. ulcer considered healed when fluorescein staining negative. succeeded wound healing 91% cases (10/11 12.7 ± 5.5 days. In group, no horse showed improvement (0/8; 0%) two eyes had perforation. Six horses, due an enlarged lesion, underwent 14 achieved 17.2 days 83% (5/6). shown be effective safe equine ulcers.
